Yara International ASA said Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan-based power-generation company Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc to reduce CO2 emissions at Kyushu's thermal-power-generation plants.

Under the deal, the Norwegian fertilizer producer and Kyushu will jointly develop a clean ammonia supply chain to Kyushu's coal-thermal-power-generation plants in the Kyushu region of Japan, and jointly develop a receiving and distribution system of clean ammonia.

Japan targets 3 million tonnes of ammonia import demand for fuel by 2030 and 30 million tonnes by 2050 as part of its measures to cut CO2 emissions and reach carbon neutrality by 2050, Yara noted.

"Ammonia does not emit carbon dioxide during combustion and is seen as an effective future energy source," it said.

Blue ammonia is derived from a carbon capture and storage process, while green ammonia is produced carbon free by using hydrogen sourced from renewable energy. The term clean ammonia comprises both blue and green ammonia.
