ZALANDO SE - Zalando and Fietskoeriers.nl to test evening delivery in four Dutch cities: Amersfoort, Nijmegen, Arnhem and Zwolle
- Customer orders to be delivered by climate-neutral cargo bikes, making the last mile carbon dioxide neutral
- Pilot in line with Zalando's sustainability strategy to further reduce environmental impact
BERLIN, MARCH 2, 2021 // Zalando, Europe's leading online platform for fashion and lifestyle, has started a collaboration with the delivery service, Fietskoeriers.nl in the Dutch cities of Amersfoort, Nijmegen, Arnhem and Zwolle. Fietskoeriers.nl are the bicycle couriers of the platform, Cycloon, who deliver Zalando packages between 5 and 10 p.m. By opting for deliveries with cargo bikes, the so-called 'last mile' delivery is made completely carbon dioxide neutral. In this way, Zalando aims to make deliveries more sustainable and contribute to reducing traffic in and around cities.
The pilot fits seamlessly within Zalando's broader do.MORE sustainability strategy. In fact, Zalando's own business operations, including delivery and returns, have been climate-neutral since 2019. Masood Choudhry, VP Logistics at Zalando, says, 'Our vision at Zalando is to be a sustainable fashion platform with a net positive impact for people and the planet. This pilot reflects our vision and contributes to our ambition to further improve our customer experience in the Netherlands. We are happy to start this cooperation with Fietskoeriers.nl in selected cities to serve our customers even more sustainably on the last mile.'

With evening deliveries, the recipient is also more likely to be at home, which means that in most cases the delivery can be done at once,' says Marieke Snoek, Managing Director of Cycloon. 'We hope the partnership with Zalando will inspire other important companies to make more sustainable choices, so our list of now more than 30 green cycling cities we serve can also grow.'
Zalando is investing in its last mile services by building up strong networks with local partners like fietskoeriers.nl. Through projects with regional carriers that use cargo bikes and electric vehicles, Zalando is looking into new ways of eco-friendly last mile delivery by reducing the carbon footprint. With these pilots, Zalando gains insights on the opportunities and challenges of carbon neutral last mile operations that can be leveraged and shared with current and future partners.

Fietskoeriers.nl is part of Cycloon: the delivery expert in the Netherlands. It is Cycloon's mission to get the delivery market moving and make it greener and more social. Therefore, in 2016, Cycloon took the initiative to create Fietskoeriers.nl and sought cooperation with now 20 professional bicycle courier companies in over 30 cities.
