To protect patient privacy, federal, state, and local government healthcare agencies need to use solutions that help support compliance with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Enacted in 1996, HIPAA is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information against unauthorized uses and disclosures.

We're proud that Zoom for Government includes controls that help our customers comply with HIPAA.

HIPAA and Zoom for Government

HIPAA compliance is a necessary requirement for any government entity acting as a 'Covered Entity' under the HIPAA rules.

With Zoom for Government providing a platform that supports HIPAA compliance, government employees and contractors can provide telehealth services to all medical beneficiaries related to their operations, including:

  • Agency employees, service personnel, and their families
  • Prison inmate populations
  • Members of the public
BAA makes it happen

To get started with HIPAA-related use cases on Zoom for Government, organizations that classify as a Covered Entity under the HIPAA rules can accept a business associate agreement (BAA) on their Zoom for Government account. With the required BAA in place, you can use the platform to support healthcare services - such as telehealth visits with patients or discussing care coordination with other providers over Zoom.

Existing compliance and commitments

In addition to HIPAA, Zoom for Government platform's controls support additional commitments, including:

  • FedRAMP Moderate
  • DOD IL/2
  • FIPS 140-2 cryptography
  • 300+ NIST controls
