Teamwork and attention to detail go hand in hand for Kaufmann Bausysteme's new company headquarters in Vorarlberg

Architecture and lighting solutions, as well as the various building services, worked hand in hand on the construction of the new Kaufmann Bausysteme headquarters. Alongside three architects' offices and other partners, Zumtobel was also involved in the new development, providing a perfectly tailored lighting solution for the sustainable building. Zumtobel SUPERSYSTEM inLine became part of the ceiling, emphasising the clear structures of the state-of-the-art modular timber building.

Dornbirn, 27 May 2021 - The clear, linear structure of the new Kaufmann Bausystemeheadquarters in Reuthe, Vorarlberg, is already apparent from the outside. The international company is a global market leader in timber modular construction. The modular building, designed by Johannes Kaufmann Architektur,NKBAK Architektenand sps architekten, uniquely epitomises flexibility, sustainability, simplicity and quality. Zumtobel worked closely with ceiling systems manufacturer HAUFEon the project: the lighting solution was specially adapted to the surface-tempered baffle ceiling, integrating perfectly into the architecture.

Built in record time

The 54-metre-long building, which stretches over two floors and comprises a total of 32 individual modules, was built in record time, with construction taking only six months, thanks to the modular design. "'Courageous construction' is the guiding principle both of our company and our new building project: courageous construction in the sense of partnership-based architecture - 3 architects - 1 draft. Our construction partnerships could also be seen as courageous construction, as all building services were negotiated and provided by long-standing partners from the region - without a single invitation to tender. The result of a six-month construction period is a perfectly functioning, wonderful building and, all things considered, the costs were spot on - no further explanation needed," says Christian Kaufmann, Managing Director of Kaufmann Bausysteme, of the project design and construction process of his new company headquarters. Inside and out, the overall effect of the new building in Reuthe is harmonious and contemporary, thanks to the sophisticated composition of wood with other materials. Both the building's design and its fittings focus consistently on sustainability and simplicity. For example, heat is generated using geothermal power, while the fully green roof has a photovoltaic system with 18 kW of installed power that provides two thirds of the building's energy requirements. Employees also have access to an electric vehicle charging station.

Adapted lighting solution for maximum flexibility

The clear, linear design of the building is further enhanced by Zumtobel's lighting solutions. The compact SUPERSYSTEM inLinerecessed LED module has been adapted for the baffle ceiling to create a flexible system of light modules that can be positioned wherever required. Notable features of SUPERSYSTEM include its symmetrical wide-beam homogeneous light distribution with a beam angle of 60° and colour rendering of Ra > 90, while the micro-pyramidal optics ensure optimum glare control. The LED modules can be easily mounted in the baffle ceiling, with no need for tools. PANOSdownlights were installed in the outdoor areas and sanitary facilities, with high-quality light provided in the bar area by the simple and elegant PANOS pendant luminaires. The streamlined, cylindrical aluminium luminaire body perfectly complements the modern, minimalist architecture, emphasising its individual impact and creating tasteful lighting.

From niche products to global market leader

Founded in 1952 as a carpentry business, Kaufmann Bausysteme now produces prefabricated modular timber elements that can be combined in various ways to create flats, houses or an entire housing estate. The open structure enables flexible layouts and combinations. The timber material combines environmentally friendly advantages with convenience, good room acoustics and a healthy indoor climate. An additional advantage of modular construction is its suitability for temporary use: the buildings can be reused in another configuration, making them extremely sustainable. Today, Kaufmann Bausysteme is a global market leader, producing around 1,500 room modules a year at two locations and using 20,000 m3 of wood in the process.

Innovative construction for a sustainable future

Kaufmann Bausysteme specialises in large projects involving at least 50 to 100 modules. The modular designs are continually being developed and adapted to new areas of application. Timber modules are used not only in large school and kindergarten projects - apartment buildings can also benefit from cheaper designs thanks to the modular system, for example. Large projects currently at the project design stage include 32 schools in Berlin, which are due to be built over the next four years using the timber module construction method as part of a school construction drive, and Luisenblock West - also in Berlin - a new modular office building for the German Federal Parliament, with a total of 400 offices. And Zumtobel is once again on board, collaborating with HAUFE to create an elegant, linear ceiling solution featuring high-quality integrated lighting.
