Insurer teams up with Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children to help provide free educational resources to local community.

Farmers Insurance Hawaii announced today that it will donate $5,000 to the Child Passenger Safety Program at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children to help make Honolulu's roadways safer. Farmers Insurance Hawaii's funding will help increase accessibility of community car seat safety check services, as well as help provide car seats for families in financial need and for children with special health care needs.

With Farmers support, the program assisted more than 200 families with in-person and virtual car seat checks in 2020, helping parents and caregivers practice installation and safe use of car seats.

'We continue to prioritize investing in programs that help benefit the communities Farmers has the privilege to serve,' said Melanie Joseph, marketing manager for Farmers Insurance Hawaii. 'We're proud to support the Kapi'olani Medical Center's Child Passenger Safety program that will help save lives and keep Hawaii's keiki safer.'

Kapi'olani Medical Center currently hosts virtual car seat checks on Wednesdays by appointment only. Families can sign up for a 30-45-minute video conference, attended by certified child passenger safety technicians who assist families in learning about the proper use and installation of car seats.

'The main focus of Child Passenger Safety Program is to keep kids safe, in and around vehicles,' said Lisa Dau, RN, injury prevention coordinator for Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children. 'Farmers Insurance is an incredible community collaborator that recognizes the statewide value of this education service. The pandemic has been challenging but the ongoing needs of local families has allowed us to adapt to a virtual care seat check option. These online connections are really important for parents and caregivers who want to feel confident in protecting their kids when travelling.'
