Founded in 1945, the firm was formerly known as Montag & Caldwell, Inc. and changed their name to Montag & Caldwell LLC after a successful employee-led buyout in 2010. Montag & Caldwell traces their roots to 1945 when Louis A. Montag formed Atlanta's first independent investment advisory firm. In 1956, Eugene Caldwell was made a partner and the firm's name was changed to Montag & Caldwell, Inc. In 1968, Montag & Caldwell, working with Financial Services Corp., incorporated their first mutual fund, the Alpha Fund.
