Consumer companies fell as fears of a prolonged spike in fuel prices weighed on airlines and cruiselines.
Alaska Air Group said the spike in fuel costs would widen its first-quarter adjusted loss by a least 70 cents a share.
Sysco, the biggest U.S. food distributor to restaurants, hospitals and schools, struck a deal to acquire family-owned Jetro Restaurant Depot for roughly $29 billion, including debt. Shares plunged, as investors looked askance on the timing of the deal.
