Online broker Montrose's clients spent February snapping up battered giants. These are companies whose average return is -24 percent from their peak. At the same time, they have recovered somewhat from their lowest point, rising by 7 percent.

“This reflects a clear pattern among our clients — they are not seeking safety in stocks that have already soared by chasing yesterday's winners, but rather are looking for value among companies currently shunned by the market. It's a strategy that requires nerves of steel and the ability to see volatility as a buying opportunity,” says Andersson, savings economist at Montrose.
