The German government's stance on UniCredit and Commerzbank is well known and remains unchanged, a Finance Ministry spokesperson said, adding that Berlin supports Commerzbank's strategy of independence.

"A hostile takeover would be unacceptable, especially considering a systemically important bank like Commerzbank," the spokesperson stated.
