SES announced on Monday that it had been selected by Colombian telecom operator Inred to provide broadband connectivity services in remote areas of the Amazon.

The Luxembourg-based group says that the agreement covers the provision of services to more than 500 homes, schools and administrations from its powerful satellites based in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).

This constellation of satellites, located 8,000 km from the earth's surface, will link up the town of Leticia and other rural areas in the Amazonas department.

In a press release, SES points out that it had previously collaborated with Inred to offer free Wi-Fi connectivity services to almost one million people living in some 1,300 geographical areas in Colombia.
