Tokyo shares edged lower Wednesday as a plunge in business confidence in the Bank of Japan's latest corporate sentiment survey added to market concerns about an uptrend in new coronavirus infection cases in and outside the country.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 166.41 points, or 0.75 percent, from Tuesday at 22,121.73. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 20.16 points, or 1.29 percent, lower at 1,538.61.

Decliners were led by pharmaceutical, textile and apparel, and real estate issues.
