International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Monday.
The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 1.1% to 166.40. The European index declined 0.5% to 146.83. The Asian index fell 1.8% to 222.79. The Latin American index dropped 1.6% to 208.49. And the emerging-markets index was down 1.9% at 373.35.
China Finance Online Co. and BHP Group Ltd. were among the companies whose ADRs traded actively.
BHP Group Ltd. said it is considering selling its oil-and-gas business in what would rank as one of the energy industry's biggest deals this year: Analysts estimate the unit could be worth at least $15 billion. It is talking with Australia's Woodside Petroleum Ltd. about a possible deal in which BHP shareholders would receive Woodside stock. ADRs fell 2.6% to $75.82.
Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE on Monday said they have submitted Phase 1 data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to support the evaluation of a booster dose of their Covid-19 vaccine. Pfizer and BioNTech said a booster dose given within six to 12 months after the primary vaccination schedule may help maintain a high level of protection against Covid-19, and that they plan to seek FDA approval of a third dose for individuals ages 16 and older. BioNTech's ADRs closed down 9% at $343.10.
China Finance Online Co.'s ADRs fell 35% to $5.21 after the company said it received a compliance failure notice from Nasdaq last week.
Pearson PLC agreed to pay $1 million to resolve an accusation that it misled investors about a 2018 cyber intrusion involving the theft of millions of student records, including birthdates and email addresses, and had inadequate disclosure controls and procedures, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Monday. ADRs eased 0.1% to $10.88.
