International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Wednesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts slipped 1.1% to 137.43. The European index ticked down 0.8% to 128.28. The Asian index declined 1.6% to 167.97. The Latin American index retreated 1.2% to 179.63, while the emerging-markets index lost 1.9% to 283.78.

ArcelorMittal SA was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The steel maker declined 8.5% after signing a memorandum of understanding with energy company RWE AG to work together to develop, build and operate offshore wind farms and hydrogen facilities in Germany.

Anglo-Swedish pharma giant AstraZeneca PLC rose 1.2% following an agreement with Biocartis Group NV aimed at the development and applicable pre-market notification or approval with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of a companion diagnostic test on Biocartis' Idylla platform for use with AstraZeneca's Tagrisso.
