Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund is seeking info on illiquid assets such as forests and gold that are currently outside the scope of its investments.

GPIF said Tuesday that it is requesting basic information on illiquid assets as part of its research activities, how to incorporate them into portfolios, and examples at other foreign pension funds. These assets include forests, farmland, gold and bitcoin, for example, it said.

As of the end of December, GPIF had 224.70 trillion yen ($1.506 trillion) in assets, primarily invested in stocks and bonds.

The pension fund also said it is requesting info on markets and evaluation methods for illiquid assets such as infrastructure, real estate and private equity that it already invests in.

Alternative assets made up 1.53% of GPIF's total assets as of the end of December, compared with its limit of 5%.
