Shares of technology companies rallied along with other growth stocks. Thursday's gains put stocks on firm footing for the week.

All three major benchmarks have fully recovered from Monday losses, when a selloff in Facebook stock and shares of other big technology companies rippled through the market.

The Justice Department will impose large fines on federal contractors that fail to meet what its second in command said are "required cybersecurity standards," including the disclosure of cybersecurity breaches.

Meanwhile, workforce expense reimbursement software provider Motus will get an additional private-equity owner as Permira joins longtime investor Thoma Bravo in backing the company.
