Jeong Kim to take up post of Minister of Future Creation and Science in South Korea
Paris, February 18, 2013 - Alcatel-Lucent announces today the appointment of Gee Rittenhouse as President of the world-renown Bell Labs, part of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU).
Gee Rittenhouse, currently chief operating officer of Alcatel-Lucent's technology platforms business, has an extensive experience within Bell Labs, as head of Bell Labs Research and in overseeing all Bell Labs research centers and activities for Alcatel-Lucent. He also chaired GreenTouch(TM), an industry-wide consortium launched by Bell Labs whose goal is making a thousand fold improvement to the energy efficiency of ICT networks.

Jeong Kim, Bell Labs' president for the last eight years, is to return to his native South Korea, where he is to be appointed as the country's new Minister of Future Creation and Science. Following his departure from Alcatel-Lucent, the functions of Chief Technology Office and Corporate Strategy will report directly to the CEO.

Commenting, Jeong Kim said: "I have very mixed feelings today. I am very sad to leave an incredible team and a role that I've been passionate about for the last eight years, but at the same time, am truly honoured to take up a pivotal public role in the country I was born in, and left at the age of 14 with my parents to emigrate to the United States. Gee Rittenhouse - with whom I have worked for so many years - will be a fantastic leader for Bell Labs. He will maintain the spirit of an organization whose innovation and contribution to Alcatel-Lucent's technology portfolio is unparalleled by any research body in the world today."
About Gee Rittenhouse
George 'Gee' Rittenhouse is currently Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel-Lucent platforms division. From 2007 to 2011, he held the position of Vice-President, Bell Labs Research. In this role, Gee was responsible for creating new growth opportunities by inventing technologies with disruptive impact, including green innovations to promote environmental sustainability. Gee also became the first chairman of GreenTouch(TM), an industry-wide consortium whose goal is making a thousandfold improvement to the energy efficiency of ICT networks. Gee has fostered an open innovation model at Bell Labs by developing research partnerships to leverage Alcatel-Lucent's knowledge effectively with external partners.
Prior to this, Gee Rittenhouse led the Bell Labs' Technology Integration Group, with a primary mission of taking Bell Labs research assets and innovations and driving them, through development activities and project management, into Alcatel-Lucent products and services. In this position, he was closely connected with all of Alcatel-Lucent's business divisions, interlocking their needs and strategies with Bell Labs' research activities, priorities, and innovations areas.
Further back in his career, Gee was Vice-President of Bell Labs Wireless Research. In 2000, he was promoted to Director of the Wireless Technology Research Department and led several projects including MIMO system development, cellular network optimization, wireless IP networks, and fourth-generation wireless systems. Gee joined Bell Laboratories as a member of technical staff in 1993 where he worked on high-speed circuits using X-ray lithography for optical networking applications.
Gee received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1986 and his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1993. In 2002, Gee received the Bell Labs Fellow Award. He has numerous publications and patents in the areas of wireless systems and circuits.
