China Eastern Airlines Corp. reported a third-quarter loss due to the slump in international travel set off by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Shanghai-based airline said its loss for the quarter was 563 million yuan ($84.1 million) compared with a profit of CNY2.42 billion a year earlier.

Revenue in the quarter fell 50% to CNY17.17 billion, it said.

For the first three quarters, the airline posted a net loss of CNY9.105 billion, compared with a profit of CNY4.37 billion in the same period the year before.

Passengers dropped 48% to 50.5 million in the nine-month period.

China Eastern Airlines said air travel in China was showing "a trend of steady recovery," but it expects that its full-year result will be adversely affected by continued curbs on international travel.
