Mars Makes Chocolate with Conergy Solar

26.06.2014

Conergy Australia announced today that it has successfully installed a 210kWp solar power installation for leading confectionary manufacturer, Mars Australia.

The large-scale rooftop installation at the Mars Ballarat facility will generate 1TJ (280,000kW/h) of power, and comprises a mixture of fixed solar panels and 2-axis tracker mounted panels, totalling 840 solar panels.

Acting Mars General Manager, Mr Duncan Webster said "This solar photovoltaic installation will reduce energy consumption by 280MW/h per annum, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 350 tonnes a year and provide net energy cost savings of $50,000 a year."

The Conergy project delivers an innovative solution to reducing the Mars Ballarat factory operating costs keeping them competitive in the local market while continuing to produce the highest quality chocolate.

Conergy Managing Director, Mr David McCallum has said, "This is the dawn of a new beginning for Conergy with our growing global network and local ability to deliver direct-to-market complete solar solutions with full financial backing, engineered for optimum performance and inclusive of all monitoring, operations and maintenance services."

"This landmark Mars Australia solar project clearly demonstrates our ability to deliver and that Conergy solar solutions can effectively power the manufacturing sector."

The peak body representing Australia's clean energy sector, the Clean Energy Council's Deputy Chief Executive, Mr Kane Thornton said, "A growing number of businesses and manufacturers are recognising the benefits of installing solar power to reduce their power bills and make them more competitive over the long term.  Some big brands are crunching the numbers and working out that solar can be a cost-effective solution to their energy needs."

Key features of the Mars solar installation include:

- Conergy German-made panels, providing high yields even in diffused light and positive performance
tolerance of up to +4.99Wp, backed by a superior linear performance warranty term of 25 years.
- Rooftop mounting system rated to withstand cyclonic conditions.
- Two 6kW solar tracking systems, guaranteeing up to 45% higher system yields.
- Three phase inverter system, providing high yield performance in the field.
- High performance monitoring system, ensuring optimum tracking of power output throughout the year.
- Minimal maintenance, further reducing operating costs.
