HONOLULU, Sept. 14, 2021 - Hawaiian Electric crews will extend its work to replace electrical wiring equipment on overhead transmission lines in the Salt Lake and Foster Village neighborhoods through Wednesday, Sept. 15. Crews also worked on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 13 and 14.

The work will improve system reliability in the area. The specialized cables protect the high-voltage conductors from lightning strikes among other capabilities.

Wednesday's work will close one lane in both directions of Bougainville Drive and Salt Lake Boulevard, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., as crews complete the project. Closures will affect:

  • The far-right northbound lane of Bougainville Drive approaching Salt Lake Boulevard by the Makalapa Substation, and the southbound left turn lane onto Salt Lake Boulevard.
  • The far-right eastbound lane of Salt Lake Boulevard before Bougainville Drive to Lawehana Street and the far right westbound lane near Lawehana Street to Bougainville Drive.

Electronic message boards have been posted to alert area motorists of the work. Traffic cones and safety signs will mark the work zones and flagmen and special duty police will be on site to provide traffic control.

Motorists should drive with caution when approaching and passing the work zones, plan ahead for traffic delays or seek alternate routes during the workdays.
