Alstom-HCC JV awarded Rs 1843 cr Tehri Pumped Storage ProjectMumbai, June 27, 2011: HCC (Hindustan Construction Company), a leading infrastructure construction and development company, in a joint venture with Alstom is awarded a prestigious contract worth Rs 1843 crore from THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) to construct Tehri Pumped Storage Plant in Tehri, Uttarakhand. This is an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract wherein HCC’s share is Rs.701 crore. The project is to be completed in 54 months.

The scope of work involves construction of Head Race Tunnel, Surge Shaft, Penstocks, Underground Powerhouse, Ventilation System Gallery, Bus bar gallery & Cavern, Drainage Gallery, Access Adits & Tail Race Tunnel. The Tehri Pump Storage Project comprises of

four reversible pump turbine units of 250 MW each. The operation of Tehri PSP is based on the concept of recycling of water discharged between upper reservoir and lower reservoir. The Tehri Dam reservoir will function as the upper reservoir and Koteshwar reservoir as the lower balancing reservoir. On completion, additional generating capacity of 1000 MW, peaking power, will be added to the Northern Region.

HCC has successfully constructed over 25 per cent of India’s hydel power generation capacity, including several projects in the challenging Himalayan region. HCC has constructed the Head Race Tunnel & Surge Shaft for India’s largest commissioned power generation project, the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Electric Project (1500MW), and the Underground Powerhouse & Tunnel for the Chamera Hydro Electric Power Project, Stage I.

HCC is currently executing fourteen hydro-electric power projects, including four in Jammu & Kashmir, three in Himachal Pradesh, two in Bhutan and one each in Uttarakhand, Sikkim, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra.
