Newcrest and Australian Doctors International support New Ireland Provincial Health Authority

Newcrest Mining Limited and Australian Doctors International (ADI) have partnered to support the New Ireland Provincial Health Authority (NIPHA) in their preparedness to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently Newcrest announced its support to the Papua New Guinea Government through the establishment of the K20 million Community Support Fund, which will initially fund the procurement of essential equipment to protect the health workers and the community members they are treating.

The first shipment of PPE and hygiene supplies to NIPHA, which was delivered on Wednesday 22 April, provides essential protection to enable the health workers to work safely and reduce the risk of infection in the health center. Both Newcrest and ADI look forward to continuing to provide support to New Ireland Province with regular shipments of essential medical supplies over the coming months.

"I am so thankful for the ADI and Newcrest for coming to our aid in this significant partnership," said Provincial Administrator and Provincial Taskforce COVID-19 Chairman Mr Lamiller Pawut.

"I want to further acknowledge Newcrest for all the assistance given to New Ireland Province particularly in the health sector which is under resourced".

Mr Pawut, his deputy and CEO for the New Ireland Provincial Health Authority, Dr Alex Wangnapi, were on hand to accept the first shipment of goods. Both extended their thanks and appreciation to all health workers for their efforts in ensuring that the communities of New Ireland Province remain safe and free from COVID- 19.

Under the Community Support Fund, Newcrest will be directing its support towards increasing the availability of medical care and equipment to cope with the crisis, as well as assisting in the provision of other essential goods and services in their host communities.
