BURLINGTON, Mass. (AP) _ Nuance Communications Inc. (NUAN) on Thursday reported a fiscal second-quarter loss of $13.5 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Burlington, Massachusetts-based company said it had a loss of 5 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 21 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 17 cents per share.

The voice and language technology company posted revenue of $369.3 million in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $369.5 million, also beating Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $353.8 million.

Nuance Communications shares have risen 13% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $20.21, an increase of 20% in the last 12 months.
