An abandoned gas station at 456 Grand Street in Brooklyn will be redeveloped into a mixed-use, six-story structure in conjunction with the New York City Brownfield Cleanup Program (NYC BCP).

The remedial investigation of the 18,250 square foot site, performed by Antea Group, identified required remedial action including excavation of impacted soils to a depth of approximately 14 feet below ground surface, transport of excavated soils to an approved disposal facility, and installation of a vapor and moisture barrier. As the designated environmental project managers for the remediation action, Antea Group and will oversee all activities associated with the site cleanup.

"We've successfully remediated more than 11,000 sites across the country, and this expertise aided in expediting the necessary regulatory approval of the remediation action plan," says Antea Group Project Manager, Tim Fisher. "Even though we started our process later than other sites, we are the first project to initiate field activities under the NYC BCP program. We are honored to bring our proven experience to this important, city-wide initiative."

Following the completion of remediation activities, property owner, The Babaev Group plans to develop a residential/commercial structure that will include 8,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, 40,000 square feet of rental apartment units on the second through sixth floors, and a subterranean level for valet parking.

On Monday, April 18, 2011 at 10:30 a.m., New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will hold a ground-breaking ceremony at the project site to raise awareness for the New York City Brownfield Cleanup Program.

To assist news media with technical remediation questions, Antea Group New York-based remediation experts Tim Fisher and Aaron Lapine will attend the ground-breaking event.
