SPIE sets up a high-voltage transfer station with new gas insulated 110 kV switch gear on behalf of Stadtwerke Rostock Netzgesellschaft mbH

Rostock, 14 October 2021 - SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, is implementing a new high-voltage transfer station (HV transfer station) with a gas-insulated 110 kV switch gear and all necessary auxiliary equipment on behalf of Stadtwerke Rostock Netzgesellschaft mbH (SWR NG). The work will be carried out in consortium with Beck Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co KG. The order encompasses everything from planning and commissioning to the handover of the new installations to Stadtwerke Rostock Netzgesellschaft mbH. SPIE began the work in May 2021 and is expected to complete it by July 2022.

Comprehensive scope of services

SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa is building a new high-voltage transfer station that will be connected to the existing Marienehe substation in order to provide Stadtwerke Rostock with a stable connection to the 110 kV grid.

In addition to establishing a functional building for the gas-insulated 110 kV switch gear, the scope of services also includes the planning and supply of the station control technology, the protective equipment and the communications technology. The contract also includes the installation and commissioning of the necessary auxiliary equipment such as the AC/DC system, protection and telecontrol system - including billing measurement - and the battery system. The new gas-insulated 110 kV switch gear is to be connected via the three existing 110 kV switch gear panels of the existing Marienehe substation.

"The new high-voltage transfer station will serve to connect an upcoming 20 MW power-to-heat power plant that can no longer be connected to the existing Marienehe substation due to technical and spatial constraints. In the future, the planned power plant will convert surplus electrical energy into heat and is thus an excellent example of combining the electricity and heat sectors", says Sebastian Kulla, project manager from the High Voltage operational division at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. Implementing the new high‑voltage transfer station will strengthen the Rostock-Marienehe power station of Stadtwerke Rostock AG, providing it with a long-term secure and future-oriented supply of electricity and district heating.

Ambitious scheduling

SPIE won the project in May 2021, and installation and design of the high-voltage transfer station by contractor Beck Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co. KG began in the same month. Rapid planning as well as reliable execution are crucial for successful implementation. "As general contractor, we and our consortium partner are responsible for the complete implementation of the new high‑voltage transfer station - from planning to commissioning. The first step involved preparing the detailed planning for the high‑voltage transfer station - such as the complete primary and secondary planning. This included the planning of the high-voltage transfer station, as well as the positioning of the switch gear and the location of the cable tracks. We will then carry out the technical planning of the entire auxiliary equipment so that we can start implementation before the end of the year," explains Sebastian Kulla.

Trusting partnership

With this order, SPIE and Stadtwerke Rostock Netzgesellschaft are launching a forward-looking partnership. As a product-neutral and non-proprietary system integrator, the multi-technical service provider brings many years of experience to the energy market. With a high level of technical expertise in network expansion dedicated to the energy transition, SPIE is proving to be a partner with strong implementation skills. "We want to further expand our market leadership in technical competence, innovation and capacity for digitalisation together with our customers. We are particularly looking forward to the trusting cooperation with Stadtwerke Rostock Netzgesellschaft," emphasises Robert Schaetzke, head of the Schaltanlagenbau business unit in the High Voltage operational division. "We will contribute our extensive experience in the implementation of turnkey substations and are therefore very proud to have impressed our customer with our concept and our expertise," concludes Sebastian Kulla.
