Introduction of Carbon Neutral Bags in All Kanto Regions

Taiheiyo Cement Corporation (Headquartered in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; Masafumi Fushihara, President and Representative Director) has switched to "Carbon Neutral Bags" (hereinafter, CN bags) that use biomass plastic for all* bagged Portland cement sold in the Kanto region.

Cement bags are multi-structured to maintain quality, and plastic films are used in the middle layer. In August 2021, we became the first company in the domestic cement industry to adopt CN bags that replace this middle-layer film with biomass plastic. To date, we have conducted numerous evaluative tests on durability, etc., and have recently switched all bagged Portland cement sold in the Kanto region to CN bags. (Photo 1, Figure 1)

This CN bag can contribute to reducing the use of fossil resources and associated CO₂ emissions. By switching over to CN bags for the entire Kanto region we expect to reduce plastic consumption by approximately 15.9 tons per year and CO₂ emissions by approximately 49.5 tons per year. In the future, we will continue to expand the use of CN bags, with the aim of nationwide deployment.

Under our "Carbon Neutral Strategy 2050", we are developing CCU technologies such as separating and recovering CO2 from cement kiln exhaust gas and utilizing the CO2 as a new resource. At the same time, we are working to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire supply chain by 2050 through initiatives such as the introduction of CN bags and other products.
