Telecom watchdog BIPT imposes a €1 million fine on Telenet "for non-compliance with the simplified procedure for changing fixed operator (Easy Switch) in its outlets."

The news: BIPT's control services have visited Telenet's nearly 90 outlets, finding that in a clear majority of Telenet's outlets "Easy Switch is not offered as a standard procedure by the sellers and, as a result, Telenet does not operate there in accordance with the rules." For this reason, BIPT is imposing a EUR 1 million fine on Telenet.

Easy Switch

What it comes down to: Easy Switch is a legally defined procedure that makes it easier for subscribers to change fixed operator.

  • In this procedure, unique identification codes (the "Easy Switch ID") are used to identify the services (fixed Internet, TV, bundles) that the subscriber wants to transfer from the old operator to the new operator.
  • When Easy Switch is used when switching to another operator, the new operator arranges the cancellation of services with the old operator. This takes the administration out of the consumer's hands. The duration of service interruption is reduced and the risk of double billing is eliminated.
  • "Easy Switch can therefore be considered as a tool for subscribers who are no longer satisfied with their current operator and therefore want to switch to another operator, without any additional problems," BIPT summarizes.
