TERNA: AUTHORISATION PROCESS LAUNCHED FOR TWO NEW UNDERGROUND CABLE IN THE METROPOLITAN CITY OF MILAN

€7 million investment for the efficiency of the electricity grid north of Milan

4 km of new underground 220 kV power lines will be built and three overhead supports will be demolished

Rome, 27 March 2023 - Following the launch by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security of the authorisation procedure for two new underground power lines in the Milan area, Terna published the notice identifying the plots of land potentially affected by the new infrastructure.

The project, for which the company led by Stefano Donnarumma will invest over €7 million, involves the construction of two 220 kV cable connections, approximately 4 km long, between the Municipality of Milan and that of Cormano. The new lines will connect the future "Comasina" primary cabin, owned by the local distributor, to the line owned by Terna, "Ospiate - Cormano - Sesto San Giovanni". The construction of the power lines will also allow for the demolition of three overhead supports in the urban area of Cormano.

The work will increase the meshing of the electricity grid, increasing the safety and quality of the energy transmission service in the area north of Milan. The power lines will mainly run along the existing road network and will be built with the latest-generation cables with XLPE insulation - a particularly reliable and sustainable technology.

The project documentation will be available for consultation at the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the Municipalities of Milan and Cormano. Written observations may be submitted to the Ministry and to Terna within 30 days of publication.

Terna, which at the regional level manages over 8,400 km of high- and extra-high-voltage power lines and 135 electricity substations, in the 2023 Development Plan has foreseen a commitment of €1.3 billion in Lombardy for the next 10 years, making the region the first place for investment in Northern Italy.

Among the main works: the Milan-Montalto HVDC connection between Lazio and Lombardy, which will make it possible to transfer the surplus energy from renewable sources from the Central Italy to the northern regions that typically have a higher energy demand, and the works for of the 'Milan- Cortina 2026' Olympic and Paralympic Games, which provide for new underground lines in Milan and a cable connection between Livigno and Premadio in Valtellina.
