Climate change is a global issue that will only be solved through collective efforts. Best Buy is focused on reducing our own carbon impact, and helping our customers use less energy as well. Here are some of the ways we contribute to this effort:

  • We are on track to exceed our science-based goal of reducing our carbon emissions 45 percent by 2020 (over a 2009 baseline).
    • We optimize our store energy usage by automating the lighting, heating and air conditioning.
    • We transitioned our Geek Squad car fleet to the hybrid Toyota Prius c, reducing fuel usage.
    • We purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), which contributed to 14 percent of our reduction in 2016.
  • We help our customers choose from a wide variety of energy-efficient products so they can live more sustainably.
    • Since 2009, ENERGY STAR® certified products sold at Best Buy have helped our customers realize $662 million in utility bill savings and prevented 9.2 billion pounds of CO emissions. That's the equivalent of removing more than 880,000 cars from the road for a year. We were named ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for the fourth year in a row for these efforts.
    • Our growing assortment of Smart Home products, such as connected thermostats, lighting and electrical plugs, bring our customers energy savings as well as convenience and peace of mind.
  • We offer consumers a convenient option for responsibly disposing of their old electronics.
    • In 2016, the amount of electronics we collected for recycling avoided the release of more than 450 million pounds of CO into the atmosphere. That's the equivalent of the electricity needed to power 23,000 U.S. homes for a year.

Generally, we encourage all nations, companies, nonprofits and individuals to seek opportunities to reduce their carbon impact. Specifically, we encourage the U.S. and the nearly 200 parties who signed the United Nations' Climate Agreement to remain committed to limiting global temperature increase. This collective action will result in a healthier world for generations to come.
