Lifting of WA Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation Moratorium
Buru Energy welcomes the lifting of the Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation Moratorium and clarification of Dampier Peninsula boundaries.
The announcement today by the WA State Government that the moratorium on Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation (fraccing) has been lifted over existing Petroleum Titles is a welcome step forward after the Independent Scientific Inquiry confirmed last year that the activity is low risk if properly regulated.
ASX: BRU
The moratorium has been lifted on the majority of Buru's current titles as set out on the attached map provided by the WA State Government.
Buru is of the view that the current regulations provide a framework where fraccing can be undertaken safely and without any significant environmental impacts. Prior to the moratorium Buru Energy had undertaken a number of fracs on three wells in the Canning Basin, all with no incidents, no detectable impact on the environment, and fully compliant with current legislation.
The Company looks forward to working with Government to implement in an appropriate and workable manner the recommendations of the Independent Scientific Inquiry for further regulation of the industry.
In regard to the Government's delineation of the Dampier Peninsula as a "frac free zone", the Company has worked constructively with Government to ensure the boundaries of the zone are appropriate in relation to the Company's existing petroleum titles and to provide certainty for the community. Consequently, we have agreed with Government that the Broome township and water supply areas in our existing petroleum titles will form part of the Dampier Peninsula fraccing exclusion zone.
Buru has a long history of working constructively and pro-actively in helping protect areas and was responsible for the exclusion of Roebuck Bay from its petroleum titles in 2011 in association with the Yawuru Native Title Holders (as attached).
We look forward to being able to demonstrate that the gas resources of the Canning Basin can be safely and efficiently extracted for the benefit of all stakeholders.

ASX ANNOUNCEMENT (ASX: BRU) | 24 May 2011 |
Buru and Yawuru People working together to protect Roebuck Bay
Buru Energy Limited ("Buru") is pleased to announce that it has today confirmed arrangements to ensure that the Yawuru People are able to exercise their traditional role as the custodians of Roebuck Bay without intrusion from oil and gas exploration. To help achieve this, Buru has voluntarily given up its current rights to explore for oil and gas in Roebuck Bay, reflecting its commitment to working with local communities in the Kimberley in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Buru is delighted to be able to help ensure that Roebuck Bay and the surrounding Ramsar wetlands are incorporated into the planned Roebuck Bay Conservation Estate in the most appropriate manner.
Roebuck Bay
Roebuck Bay is a tropical marine embayment with extensive, highly biologically diverse, intertidal mudflats.
