CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) has hosted five online caring visits to elderly people to continue its Sharing the Festive Joy programme despite the social distancing restrictions introduced because of COVID-19 pandemic.

The online events the first of their kind were held in partnership with the Po Leung Kuk, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Yan Chai Hospital and allowed for more than 200 people from elderly homes and day care centres to celebrate the Tuen Ng festival.

CLP volunteer Team used video conferencing technology to connect with elderly guests, who have been left with fewer social activities because of the pandemic. The volunteers led exercises, played games, and shared tips with guests on how to shield against the coronavirus and how to save energy. The guests also enjoyed a singing performance by the volunteers and were given goody bags and festive snacks provided by CLP Power.

'For past years, we have worked with non-Government organisations to host luncheons for elderly people at festival times,' explained CLP Power Managing Director Mr T K Chiang. 'Sadly, visits to elderly homes have been suspended since early this year in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, which meant we could not be with them in person for the Tuen Ng festival.

'Our volunteers therefore came up with an ingenious idea to meet and interact with the guests online to cheer them up,show our care, along with the employees of elderly homes and day care centres. We will continue to adjust to the changing situation and devise more tailor-made programmes to continue our help for people in need.'

Ms Millian Kam was one of the CLP volunteers and joined the online festivities with her daughters. She said: 'Social distancing is necessary because of the pandemic and elderly people in elderly homes are particularly in need of attention. I joined this activity with my daughters, who are staying at home while school classes are suspended, to give them a chance to show care for less fortunate people in our community.'

One of the guests, Mr Ng, said he greatly enjoyed the event. 'No visits are allowed to our homes at the moment and we are not allowed to go out,' he said. 'I was very happy to be able to meet up with volunteers from CLP and play games with them online.'

CLP Power has organised a wide range of community projects in recent years to address social needs in Hong Kong. The Sharing the Festive Joy programme was launched in 2014 and has seen CLP volunteers, in partnership with a variety of community partners, celebrate festivals with nearly 4,000 elderly people.
