Hong Kong is facing immense social and economic challenges.

The business environment is exceptionally harsh and the catering industry has been particularly badly affected, while people's living standards in general have suffered. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) has therefore allocated HK$20 million to a Let's Eat and Cheers programme to help people in need while generating business for restaurants.

Let's Eat and Cheers runsfrom January to April in partnership with four major catering associations and involves restaurants throughout the CLP Power supply area. Complimentary restaurant coupons are being distributed through non-Governmental organisations (NGO) to 100,000 disadvantaged households, including elderly people, low-income families, and tenants of sub-divided units. Each household will receive a total of HK$200 worth of restaurant coupons (4 coupons for HK$50 each) to use in participating restaurants, revitalising the catering industry and driving economic activity in Hong Kong.

CLP Power Managing Director Mr T K Chiang said, 'CLP Power has grown hand in hand with Hong Kong through the decades. In the past year, Hong Kong's society and economy have faced unprecedented challenges, affecting every sector of business as well as people in need. Together with other relief measures, I hope the Let's Eat and Cheers programme will support different sectors of the community and help revive our economy.'

CLP Power organised a tea gathering today for the programme, involving 50 beneficiariesliving in Sham Shui Po. One of them, Mr Yick, said, 'I usually cook at home because it's too expensive to eat out. The restaurant coupons from CLP Power will allow me to eat out with family and friends over the Chinese New Year holiday which is much more enjoyable than staying at home on my own.'

Mr Wong Kam Yan, Director of the Grand Restaurant which is one of the participating restaurants, said, 'Business has been hit heavily over the past six months. People aren't eating out and many wedding banquets and business functions have been rescheduled or cancelled. Let's Eat and Cheers programme encourages customers to eat out again which is very helpful to us.'

More than 500 restaurants are participating in the Let's Eat and Cheers programme, including Chinese restaurants, tea restaurants ('cha chaan teng'), noodle and congee restaurants and snack shops in Kowloon, New Territories and outlying islands. The programme has invited over 300 service units under 27 NGOs to nominate household in need and to distribute the restaurant coupons. As well as the Let's Eat and Cheers programme, CLP Power has set aside more than HK$200 million in relief measures for different sectors of the community this year. The measures include electricity subsidies for small and medium-sized (SME) enterprises in the first half year, electricity bill payment deferral for SME customers in the catering and retail industries, electricity subsidies for elderly people, low-income families, disabled people and tenants of sub-divided units, rewiring work for sub-divided units to install individual electricity meters, energy-efficient electrical appliances for transitional housing units, and scholarships for disadvantaged students in Vocational and Professional Education and Training institutions.
