Exelon : Criterion Wind Project Receives Gold Certification and Bat Conservation Awards From Wildlife Habitat Council

KENNETT SQUARE, PA - The Criterion Wind Project in western Maryland earned the highest Gold Certification and won the Bats Project Award and Land Conservation Agreement Award from the Wildlife Habitat Council.

'Bats are key ecosystem service providers, with both ecological and economic significance, and the conservation work of the Exelon Generation employee team at Criterion Wind is vital to bat protection,' said Margaret O'Gorman, president, Wildlife Habitat Council. 'This exceptional program demonstrates the company's overall commitment to biodiversity and serves as an example for other companies to emulate.'

Criterion is the first wind project to receive Gold Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council. Criterion seasonally curtails operations to minimize impacts to bats, and Exelon Generation has made investments to help preserve important bat habitats in the region.

'These awards and the Gold Certification at Criterion are the direct result of the hard work and dedication of our wind and environmental operations teams. Their work is evidence of Exelon's commitment to stewardship and contribution to the community,' said Glen Robinson, vice president of Renewables Operations for Exelon Generation.

The company has worked with numerous organizations on Criterion Wind's comprehensive conservation program to protect bats, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, Bat Conservation International, the Mountaineer Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and Frostburg State University.

Criterion is a 70 megawatt wind project operated by Exelon Generation, consisting of 28 wind turbines located in the western Maryland town of Oakland, in Garrett County.
