The Columbus Foundation's aim is to educate the public on the type of ship, the 'caravel', that Columbus used to discover a new world in the year 1492. Columbusmade four voyages totaling twelve years on ships like these. The foundation takes great pride in displaying and maintaining the only traveling replicas in existence today. The ships tour together as a 'sailing museum' for the purpose of educating the public and school groups on the 'Caravel', Portuguese ships used by Columbus andmany early explorers to discover the New World. The carvels are built completely by hand, without power tools, in Brazil since 1985. The Columbus Foundation receives no funds from government agencies or private foundations, and are supported entirely by the tickets purchased to tour the ships.
