Public Service : PSEG Long Island Celebrates Earth Day in Islip with Beautification Projects, Energy-Efficiency Outreach

(Uniondale, NY - April 22, 2019) - In honor of Earth Day, 120 PSEG Long Island employees came together in the Town of Islip to beautify a local park, and reduce Long Island's carbon footprint by helping customers lower their overall electrical demand.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a team of employee volunteers arrived at Brookwood Hall Park, removing weeds, refreshing flower beds, spreading mulch and doing other beautification work.

Later in the morning, PSEG Long Island volunteers distributed free reusable shopping bags and wildflower seeds to shoppers at the Best Market in Islip, and the King Kullen and Stop & Shop in West Islip. Employees handed out free LED bulbs at the Great South Bay YMCA. Meanwhile, another team of employees walked down Montauk Highway offering free energy audits to small businesses to help encourage them to install more-efficient lighting to save energy and money.

'As a West Islip resident, ratepayer and PSEG Long Island employee, I'm really proud to be part of my company's volunteer program,' said Michael Giordano, who spent the day handing out LED bulbs to visitors at the Great South Bay YMCA. 'To see so many people rally in Islip to then head out throughout the town to help educate about conservation is really special.'

'I am fortunate that my employer, PSEG Long Island allows me to volunteer in my own community where my family, friends, neighbors and I can enjoy the benefits,' said Islip resident Danielle Vaupel, who volunteered to beautify Brookwood Hall Park.

'Being an employee of PSEG Long Island and a lifelong resident in the town of Islip. I truly enjoy volunteering in my town and beautifying the park on Earth Day,' said Rob Massaro, who also pitched in to help at Brookwood Hall Park.

'The Town of Islip is committed to being good environmental stewards, and has pledged to do its part to reduce our carbon footprint,' said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. 'We are initiating new renewable energy programs such as the solar farms on two of our closed landfills, as part of our plan to build the foundation for a healthy and sustainable community going into the future.'

Islip was the last of five towns visited by PSEG Long Island volunteers in the week leading up to Earth Day as part of a large-scale effort to make public spaces greener, help residential customers use less energy, and help small businesses find new ways to save on more-efficient lighting. During Earth Week, employees handed out 20,000 LED lightbulbs, which have the potential to save customers up to $200,000 in energy costs over the next year. The company also pledged to give away 1 million reusable shopping bags by Earth Day 2020, helping to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags that can threaten ecosystems if not properly recycled.
