Spectrum's Broadband Seismic shows Kosmos' new success will lead to more hydrocarbon discoveries even further offshore Senegal and Mauritania.

Kosmos' latest giant gas and condensate discovery offshore Senegal has been announced with the Yakaar-1 discovery. Located down-channel-system of their Teranga-1 discovery made in May 2017, Yakaar-1 intersected a gross hydrocarbon column of 120 m, encountering 45m of net pay in Lower Cenomanian basin floor sand fans. This well has confirmed the presence of thick, stacked, sandstone over a very large area with very good porosity and permeability. Kosmos estimates Yakaar-1 discovered a gross Pmean gas resource of approximately 15 TCF and preliminary analysis of gas samples conducted on the rig suggests the well encountered a gas with a condensate-to-gas ratio (CGR) in the range previously encountered at Tortue-1 and Teranga-1.

On Spectrum's 2017 broadband reprocessed seismic data the discovery is clearly imaged as a high amplitude soft kick (see sample of seismic attached). This horizon, with its DHI characteristics (including AVA response) is clearly imaged to continue much further to the north and west, beyond that shown here, onto the basin floor and into open acreage. Indeed when mapped in depth this basin floor fan extends over a very large area, rising up to the west where it finally stratigraphically traps at a sand pinch out. Subtle changes in the AVA response indicate that the reservoired fluid may be richer in condensate or oil to the west where the Early Cretaceous source is covered by less sediment.
