Stantec assists 13 communities across the U.S. in securing EPA brownfield grant funding

Funding to assess, clean up, and redevelop underutilized properties

Stantec worked with 13 cities, counties, and regional organizations across the US to help secure $6.9 million in federal brownfield funding through the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Assessment, Cleanup, and Multi-Purpose Grants program.

The funds will be used to assess, clean up, and plan redevelopment of underutilized properties while protecting public health and the environment. The funds can expand the ability of communities to recycle vacant and abandoned properties for new, productive reuses and leverage considerable infrastructure and other financial resources. A few of these projects include:

• Revitalization of Spokane's University District: Assessment grant funding will be used to advance plans for revitalization of the 770-acre University District, including the waterfront along the Spokane River. The project features an innovative coalition formed between the City, the University District Public Development Authority, Gonzaga University, Washington State University, and the Empire Health Foundation.
• Assessment and cleanup in Green Bay: Assessment grant funding will be used to support long-term efforts by the City to revitalize the Broadway, Velp Avenue, and University Avenue corridors which were the focus for previous EPA-funded area-wide planning projects. The cleanup grant will be used to remediate nine parcels within The Shipyard, a 13-acre sitethat is being transformed into a multi-purpose park and recreational destination on the City's downtown waterfront along the Fox River.
• Development of River Park in Los Angeles: The grant for the City of Los Angeles will support cleanup and development of River Park on a portion of the Taylor Yard G2 Parcel. The former railyard site borders the LA River and is considered the 'crown jewel' of the $1.3 billion LA River Ecosystem Restoration project being jointly undertaken by the City and the US Army Corps of Engineers to restore ecosystem functions to an 11-mile segment of the LA River.

'It's a privilege for us to help secure brownfield funding year after year for cities and community organizations across the country, enabling them to achieve goals that otherwise might not be possible.'

The type of work completed with federal brownfield funding varies. Many times, the funding is used for environmental work and leads to a breadth of projects from site development to landscape architecture to full-scale redevelopments.

'One of the best parts of my job is working with communities to secure brownfield grants and playing a part in their environmental transformations,' said Chris Gdak, senior principal for Stantec's environmental services group in Washington. 'These grants not only increase local tax revenue but also create jobs in communities that often need them most.'

Overall, Stantec has leveraged their in-house multidisciplinary capabilities - environmental scientists, water resource specialists, planners, engineers, and comprehensive funding services specialists - to help clients across the country secure more than 130 EPA and state brownfield grants, totaling more than $50 million.
