Superior Plus Corp. Monday said it will receive a $260 million equity investment from Brookfield Asset Management Inc.

The Toronto energy distribution and specialty chemicals company said the investment strengthens its balance sheet and bolsters its ability to pursue acquisitions in a consolidating U.S. propane market.

Superior said Brookfield, through its special investments program, will buy newly created perpetual exchangeable Series 1 preferred stock of a U.S. unit of Superior on a private- placement basis.

On an as-exchanged basis, the Brookfield investment represents a roughly 15% stake on a fully diluted basis, Superior said.

Shares of Superior rose 8.2% to C$10.71 in early trading Monday.
