DALLAS (AP) _ Tenet Healthcare Corp. (THC) on Monday reported second-quarter profit of $88 million.

On a per-share basis, the Dallas-based company said it had profit of 83 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $1.26 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 99 cents per share.

The hospital operator posted revenue of $3.65 billion in the period, falling short of Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.83 billion.

Tenet shares have declined 31% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has increased 2%. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $26.41, an increase of 15% in the last 12 months.
