He is also the Chairman of the Governors Board at the Institute for Social & Economic Change.

Mr. Rao has previously served as the Chairman of Honeywell Automation India Ltd.
from 2014 to 2016.
He was also the Chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Founding Chairman of the Forum of Indian Regulators.
He held the position of Lead Independent Non-Executive Director at Reliance Infrastructure Ltd.
from 2011 to 2012.
Additionally, he has served as an Independent Director at Kanoria Chemicals & Industries Ltd.
and as an Independent Non-Executive Director at Rain Industries Ltd.
from 2011 to 2019.

Furthermore, he was the General Director at the National Council of Applied Economic Research from 1990 to 1996 and the President of the All India Management Association in 1986.
He also served as the President of the Madras Management Association in 1984 and as the Vice President of the People's Union for Civil Liberties-Tamil Nadu & Puducherry from 1976 to 1979.
Mr. Rao completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Mumbai and his graduate studies at the Delhi School of Economics.
