International stocks trading in New York closed mostly higher on Friday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.1% to 160.94. The European index increased 0.5% to 144.54. And the Latin American index rose 0.9% to 199.36.

Meanwhile, the Asian index fell 0.5% to 210.70. And the emerging-markets index eased 0.2% to 352.56.

Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo was among the companies whose ADRs traded actively.

Shares of Brazilian sanitation and water company Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo, or Sabesp, closed 12% higher at $6.78. São Paulo state Governor João Doria spoke about the focus on selling shares in state-controlled companies while at the swearing in of a new Secretary of Strategic Projects. Brazil's Congress last year approved a law to overhaul the country's regulation of the sanitation sector to encourage investment, and Sabesp is one of the biggest companies in that sector.

Automakers' ADRs fell after Toyota Motor Corp. said a day earlier that it would cut production due to a chip shortage. Toyota's ADRs fell 2.3% to $164.66; Honda Motor Corp. fell 3.1% to $29.80; and Nissan Motor Co., whose sponsored ADRs trade in New York over the counter, fell 5% to $9.77.
