There have been over 120,000 cases so far during the 2023-2024 season in Argentina.

More than 103,000 of them were recorded in the first ten weeks of this year, data show.

In comparison, there were roughly 8,300 cases in the same time period last year, which ended up being the worst season on record.

Here's Mariana Manteca, director of the Malbran Institute:

"We are going through the biggest outbreak of dengue in Argentina. What does the biggest outbreak mean? There are 200% more cases than during the same season last year..."

Most dengue cases usually appear during the southern hemisphere's late summer months, or up until about May.

"...we will also have this throughout April, we still have to finish March and, at least, 15 days of May. So we will surpass the 130,000 cases which will make this year a record year," said infectious disease specialist Eduardo Lopez.

Dengue can be fatal and so far, dozens of people have died this season.

Symptoms include high fever, headache, vomiting, and skin rash, as well as severe muscle and joint pain.

PATIENT: "It's tough, you feel a lot of fatigue."

The situation in Argentina reflects broader worry across South America where warmer and wetter weather has led to a surge in cases.

Neighboring Brazil is also battling a rise.

Last month, the Pan American Health Organization issued a warning on increased cases across the region, after last year marked the highest number of cases in decades.
