Communications services companies rose amid deal activity. News Corp, owner of this newswire and a range of other publications, agreed to buy the consumer arm of educational publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for $349 million.

That marks the media company's second deal in less than a week following its agreement to buy investment publication Investors Business Daily.

The deal adds a portfolio of high-profile novels from authors such as George Orwell, Philip Roth and J.R.R. Tolkien to News Corp.'s HarperCollins Publishers unit.

A Florida investor has expressed interest in joining an 11th-hour effort by a Maryland hotel magnate to acquire Tribune Publishing and wrest the company away from hedge fund Alden Global Capital.
