Speaking at the opening ceremony, the "Social Network" star told the audience he felt like the "nerdy kid" in school when he saw the French air force flying over Cannes for the "Top Gun: Maverick" red carpet.

"It made me feel like when I was in high school and I was the nerdy kid who decided to have like a little party on Friday night and then you find out the football player down the block is having a bigger party," he said. "And in this case the football player is Tom Cruise and the bigger party is 'Top Gun'."

The film stars Oscar-winner Julianne Moore and "Stranger Things" actor Finn Wolfhard as mother and son and is based on Eisenberg's 2020 audio drama of the same name.
