Health-care companies rose as investors bet the sector would benefit from a vaccine.

Hospital chains such as HCA Healthcare and Tenet Healthcare added to recent gains, as investors bet the companies would see a rebound in elective-surgery demand as long as states did not lock down again.

Shares of vaccine makers themselves cooled off Tuesday, however.

Pfizer partner BioNTech and U.S. drugmaker Moderna both applied for their coronavirus vaccines to be approved in the European Union, the EU's chief medicines regulator said Tuesday, with officials expected to make a decision on at least one of the vaccines by the end of the month.
