Shares of industrial and transportation companies fell on a volatile session as traders braced for the economic impact of higher interest rates.

Boeing shares fell after the jet maker said production problems and delivery delays with its 787 Dreamliner jet would cost it another $4.5 billion and posted its third annual loss in a row.

Shares of General Electric continued their retreat in the wake of a disappointing earnings report. The conglomerate remains poised to make progress on free-cash flow generation as supply-chain issues at its health-care unit fade and the aviation unit continues to grow, said analysts at brokerage Morgan Stanley.
