Producers of metals and other raw materials fell amid mixed earnings and rising interest rates.

Alcoa shares rallied after the aluminum maker reported a third-quarter loss that was not as wide as feared, despite realizing lower prices.

U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss said she would resign, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history after a tumultuous six weeks upended by her effort to push through a high-risk tax plan.

"In truth, whoever replaces Liz Truss as prime minister will be taking on a poisoned chalice given a deeply divided party and the formidable challenges facing both the U.K. and wider global economy that are not going away," said Jason Hollands, managing director of online investment service Bestinvest, in e-mailed commentary.

Akzo Nobel shares fell after the maker of paint and coatings posted third-quarter earnings short of Wall Street targets.
