Murrindindi Shire Council : Council Fire Restrictions

Council's Fire Restriction Period is now in place.

If you are in a residential area and need to burn off, you will require a permit from Council.

If you are in a Farming Zone (which generally means areas outside town limits), a permit is also required for burning off, except for small fires.

Small fires lit in the Farming Zone do not require a permit. Small fires are fires of not more than 1 metre in width and height. Fuel in these fires must be less than 75 mm (3 inches) in thickness or diameter.

Anyone in the Farming Zone wishing to burn material that does not meet the 'small fire' requirements will require a permit from the Local Laws Unit.

A burning permit requires the applicant to ensure:

• They have the means to extinguish the fire
• An adult person is present at all times
• That smoke does not cause a nuisance
• After the burn, all ashes, coals and unburnt material is spread.

If you are issued a permit, you should contact the CFA burn-off line 1800 668 511 and your local CFA brigade before you light the fire.

To obtain a permit you can contact the Local Laws Unit on 5772 0333. There is no cost for a permit.

Permits obtained from Local Laws are only valid until the CFA's declared Fire Danger Period commences.

It is important to note that the CFA will shortly declare its 'Fire Danger Period'. The dates for this period are yet to be confirmed and we will keep residents informed when the CFA's announcement is made.

During this fire danger period, no fires will be permitted in the Shire.
