Los Angeles Imposes New Mask Mandate
Los Angeles County will again require the use of masks indoors, following a sharp rise in coronavirus infections since most Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in California a month earlier.
The new order will require everyone, regardless of whether they are vaccinated, to wear face coverings in most indoor public places. It takes effect at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday. Some exceptions will apply, similar to those in place for much of the past year, including for restaurants. No businesses are being ordered to reduce capacity or close.

Canada Eyes Reopening Border to U.S. Tourists in Mid-August
Canada could start allowing Americans into the country for recreational or tourist activities starting in mid-August, Justin Trudeau's office said late Thursday. The border has been closed to most Americans since March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic prompted travel restrictions.
The reopening date is conditional on Canada's vaccination rollout maintaining its current accelerated pace and new, confirmed Covid-19 cases remaining at some of the lowest levels in the developed world, according to a statement that summarized a teleconference between Mr. Trudeau and the country's provincial and territorial leaders.
Mr. Trudeau told the premiers that Canadian and U.S. officials are in talks about reopening their 5,500-mile land border to tourists and that Canada could be in a position to start allowing fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents into Canada as of mid-August for nonessential travel, according to the statement.

Canadian Graves of Indigenous Found With Help From Oral Histories
Oral histories of children being awakened in the middle of the night to help dig graves, along with a juvenile rib bone and a tooth that had previously been found near a former government-funded boarding school for indigenous children, were part of the evidence that led to the discovery of about 200 unmarked graves near Kamloops, in the western Canadian province of British Columbia, the researcher who led the work said.
Dr. Sarah Beaulieu from the University of the Fraser Valley said there were also depressions in the ground in an area where survivors and knowledge keepers from the Tk'emlúps te Secwe pemc community recalled burials taking place. She said her work used ground-penetrating radar to detect changes in the soil to identify probable gravesites on the property of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, which operated between 1890 and 1978, and it is possible additional graves will be found.
"This investigation has barely scratched the surface," Dr. Beaulieu said during a public event in Kamloops on Thursday, noting that her research looked at just under 2 acres of the school's full 160-acre property. She said it was already known that children went missing at residential schools, and technology like ground-penetrating radar "merely provides some spatial specificity to this truth."
