Shares of energy companies fell alongside energy futures as a deterioration in the Covid-19 situation in India and mild weather in the U.S. spurred demand fears.

Oil futures fell after reports that India reported more than 100,000 new Covid cases in a single day for the first time, eclipsing case counts in other major nations. Without large reserves of its own, India is one of the world's largest oil importers.

Natural gas futures fell 4.9% to $2.51-per-million British thermal units as temperatures throughout the U.S. looked set to stay in a comfortable range between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit for the next couple of weeks, weighing on both heating and cooling usage.
