TippingPoint, a leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that it is enhancing its Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) with new protection for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) protocols, Voice over IP (VoIP), and online gaming. TippingPoint is also enhancing the performance, usability, and features of its IPS product line, including the ability to set policies by direction and virtual LAN (VLAN).

SCADA protocols are vital to the world's most critical industries that control the management of energy, oil and gas, water, electricity, and many other vital resources that people depend on daily. When these protocols were initially created, they were proprietary and not linked to the outside world. Today, several are exposed to the Internet and its associated security threats without many built-in security features. In response to the threat and at the request from critical infrastructure customers, TippingPoint has added protection against potential exploits, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, protocol anomalies, and unauthorized client/server communication over SCADA protocols, including Modbus, DNP3, and ICCP.

As VoIP adoption grows, so does enterprise network security risk. In fact, VoIP was cited as one of the top new threats on the SANS Institute's Top 20 Threat Report for the first time in 2006. TippingPoint was one of the first IPS companies to address the need for VoIP security. It established its VoIP Security Research Lab in 2004 and formed the VoIP Security Alliance (VOIPSA), www.voipsa.org, in 2005. VOIPSA now has over 100 members from the vendor, information security, and service provider industries. Through research from these efforts, TippingPoint is providing enhanced VoIP protection to customers for attacks thought most likely to occur based on specific VoIP attack tools and existing VoIP vulnerabilities. TippingPoint is also offering protection for VoIP in the form of Denial of Service attacks and VoIP protocol anomaly protection. TippingPoint's new features offer enhanced protection for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) VoIP signaling protocol.

The online gaming industry is rapidly growing and can affect corporate productivity and bandwidth availability. In response, TippingPoint has expanded its filter coverage to include online gaming for some of the most popular online games. These filters can either block or rate limit games in order to maximize network bandwidth for business-critical applications and services.

In addition to expanded security coverage, TippingPoint has enhanced its Intrusion Prevention Systems with new security configuration features and usability. Customers now have greater flexibility in setting policies, and can define multiple security policies either by direction or by VLAN for more granular policy management. By allowing users to apply policies to virtual segments within physical network segments, users have increased policy-setting options as they are not limited to physical IPS ports. Users can now determine their level of protection, setting policies and actions by network segments, VLANs, or even packet flow direction, inbound or outbound.

In addition, the TippingPoint Security Management System integrates with Cisco MARS, a security information management system that correlates information across multiple security products. The enhancements also allow the TippingPoint operating system to be upgraded without any network downtime. This feature eliminates costly network downtime associated with software updates, even during product upgrades and maintenance updates. Finally, the new features greatly improve the management and reporting with more detailed default categories for threats. Users can even create their own custom threat categories for more flexibility in establishing policies and reporting. The new features and security coverage are available immediately.
